אודות המעבדה

The Laboratory of Climatology was established in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, during 1970 when the measurement of rain started, using a raingauge.

Along with the technological progress the rain measurement system improved and a rain measurement post was stationed next to the University's dorms. A few years later an automatic Meteorological Station was established on the roof of the Rabin Complex, by the Israel Meteorological Service. Measurements of temperature (max/min), relative humidity, rainfall total and wind speed and direction are done each 10 min.

The Laboratory contains an archive of daily synoptic maps (of the eastern Mediterranean) since 1973, as well as climate measurement equipment such as the Ultimeter 2000, which is a portable kit that measures weather phenomenon such as: Temperature (Celsius/ Fahrenheit), average humidity, accumulated rainfall, barometric pressure, wind's speed and direction.

המעבדה לאקלים נוסדה בחוג לגאוגרפיה ולימודי סביבה, בשנת 1970 כאשר החלו לראשונה מדידות מטואורולוגיות יומיות באזור המעונות של היום. התחנה כללה בין היתר מד גשם סטנדרטי (מג"ס) הקיים במקום עד היום.

במשך השנים הועתקה התחנה ממקומה המקורי, בגלל צמיחת עצים בקרבתה. בשלב הראשון, התחנה הועברה לגג הבניין הרב-תכליתי ובשלב מאוחר יותר לגג בניין רבין. כיום ממוקמת התחנה המטאורולוגית האוטומטית של השרות המטאורולוגי על גג בניין רבין המודדת את הטמפרטורה (מקסימום/מינימום), הלחות היחסית, מהירות הרוח וכיוונה וכמויות גשם כל 10 דקות. הנתונים מוצגים ע"ג צג מחשב מול מזכירות החוג.

המעבדה לאקלים כוללת ארכיון מפות סינופטיות (יומיות) של מזרח אגן הים התיכון החל משנת 1972 וארכיון צילומי הלווין Meteosat.

במעבדה קיים מכשור מגוון למדידות אקלימיות (כמו לדוגמה, ערכת Ultimeter 2000) המשמש בעיקר לצרכי הוראה ולקמפוסים.
